A mixed use development located on the Tweed River in South Murwillumbah
The creation and design of this commercial space on the Murwillumbah River called for a series of simple, efficient, and flexible spaces that addressed the river frontage of the site. Thus, the key design concept revolved around the creation of spaces that engaged with the river and the parkside environment, making full use of the beautiful location of the site. Throughout the design process, a core challenge was the flood-prone nature of the site. To combat this, the construction of a one level carpark underneath a simple structural concrete platform allowed for a space-efficient rise from the site, whilst the simplicity of the concrete slab enabled complete flexibility of planning above the carpark. Commercial spaces shaped as wedges pushed to the perimeter of the building, thus creating a ‘V’ shape that opened to the river and views of the Murwillumbah CBD beyond. This also addressed natural light and created communal spaces, whilst the simple and understated design of the building thus created a form that floats lightly above the site.
