Outdoor living as the heart of the home.
Located north of Brisbane this project involved alterations and additions to an original Queenslander style house for a family of three. Taking advantage of the site's northern orientation a new protected outdoor living space was utlised to seperate the existing home from spaces added to the rear.
The deck acts climatically as a breezeway for ventilation and as a way of admitting natural light deep into the building. Visually it provides seperation between old and new while materials that are sympathetic to both the traditional and contemporary halves create an overall aesthetic.
A new kitchen and bathrooms were added, along with the renovation of much of the existing house. To this end, movement and activity were arranged around the central outdoor space in order to create a communal lifestyle for the family that is strongly linked to the natural environment.
