Wooloowin House - 2007
Located in the inner Brisbane suburb of Wooloowin, the objective of this project was to re-invent an outdated pre-war house into a contemporary, responsive living environment for a young family to provide an appropriate home for them to grow into the future. The clients brief was a building that would respond to their strong style and way of living.
Retaining the existing street facade and combining it with a new major internal renovation and rear extension proved that total removal of old buildings is not necessary required to achieve appropriate contemporary architectural outcomes.
The building was transformed from an inward looking, confused set of spaces to an outwardly focused, clearly defined relationship of ‘zones’. The building now provides a superior relationship to local climatic conditions as well as delivering client goals of separated adult/child zones, open and connected living/entertainment zones, the complete usability of their home.
Passive temperature control minimizes the days that mechanical ventilation systems are required. Strategically placed glazing allows abundant natural light into the home. Huge water storage, a bore water reticulation system and collection of all roof water maximizes water efficiency.
