Gathering communal space to the south and an interplay of exposure and enclosure.
Fronting busy Dornoch Terrace, Aspect had the opportunity to renew this 100 year old Queenslander located in Brisbane's West End. As a main road site privacy and noise concerns along the street edge produced a planning strategy that focussed on shifting living areas to the rear. This move complimented the natural Southern fall of the land and also took advantage of views over Highgate Hill to the south.
A new entertaining deck and daybed space completed the scheme and as a hub for communal gatherings, an operable roof system was incorporated to allow both natural light and sunshine into these spaces. When open they breathe beautifully, and when closed or partially closed, the roof system provides the necessary weather protection.
A large lap pool built to the side of the existing house allows immediate access to outdoor activity from the new living spaces and further enhances the permeable and open relationship between indoor and out evident throughout the home.
